Dining Around The Desert: Bistro 60

The View From Bistro 60

Last year my husband Bill and I attended a party catered by the Bistro 60 Restaurant at the Golf Club at Trilogy in La Quinta. They did a great job, but we kept forgetting to go see them at the restaurant. Well, we finally made it a couple of weeks ago and it was really good. In fact, we went back two nights in a row.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner At Bistro 60

Bistro 60 is a casual setting where you can get breakfast, lunch or dinner, seven nights a week. Bistro 60 is best known for its laid-back atmosphere, great service, and fresh, eclectic food. They use local farm-raised vegetables, quality meats, and Santa Monica seafood. They also offer theme nights and live music in the evenings Wednesday through Saturday.

I had the Pear Salad of mixed greens, almonds, grape tomatoes and Brie in a Guava Vinaigrette both nights. It was perfectly dressed, and the pear was excellent. Bill had the Caesar salad which was good but if you don’t like anchovies then you probably won’t like it as it tastes as if they are added to the dressing even though it doesn’t come with them on it.

We both had the Bistro Fish N’ Chips the first night. It’s not something that we normally have, but our waiter sold us on it. We were not disappointed. They were light and flaky and not a bit of grease. They coat their Cod fish in a Stella Beer Batter and Chipotle Tempura served with a Jalapeno Tartar Sauce and French Fries.

The next night I had a perfectly cooked Pan Seared Steelhead Salmon served in a Spanish Achiote-Seasoned Beurre Blanc, with Cilantro Risotto and Squash. Great! Bill tried the New Zealand Lamb Chops in a Mojito Demi Glace, served with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and the Chef’s Choice of Fresh Vegetables. Bill switched out the potatoes for Asparagus, which the chef was happy to do.

For Dessert, (it is a three-course menu after all) I had the Butterscotch Crème Brulee both nights and it was very nice. Tasted just like regular Crème Brulee though. I didn’t detect any butterscotch.

Bill had the Flourless Chocolate Cake, which was a very dense slab of chocolate. I like chocolate as much as the next gal, but it was a little too rich for me. The second night Bill had the Tiramisu that was good, but I’ll be sticking to the Crème Brulee.

Both nights had good live entertainment. We heard a husband and wife duo one night and a keyboard player the next. Nice, relaxing dinner music which was a welcome change.

Good Food, Good Service & Great Views

Overall the food was very good, the service was welcoming and efficient, and the staff actually act like they enjoy working there. The Bistro 60 prices are hard to beat as well, and the views of the golf course and nearby mountains add to the experience. We'll be back!

Hey Canada: Happy Canada Day 2014!

Much like our July 4th here in the United States, Canada Day celebrates the Constitution Act of 1867, which created Canada.

A Canadian federal law passed in 1879 makes July 1st a statutory holiday which progressed from the “Anniversary of Confederation” to “Dominion Day” and finally to “Canada Day.”

Every American Should Visit Canada More Than Once!

My husband Bill and I have enjoyed extensive visits to Canada over the years. And my advice for Americans that have not traveled to Canada is just to go! You won’t be disappointed.

Travel to Canada also represents a great summer getaway for full-time Palm Springs area residents and is closer than you think. The provinces (similar to our States) of British Columbia and Alberta are popular western Canada destinations for those of us in the Western U.S.

Palm Springs Area Real Estate Prices Rise Again Year Over Year

Buyers of Palm Springs area homes and condos continue to find good values in most desert cities. That said, rising prices for properties sold during May 2014 have slowed overall unit sales a bit in some market segments. Foreclosure and short sale property sales during May dropped 50% compared with May 2013.

Foreclosure and short sales accounted for just 9% of single-family home sales during May ’14; a 50% drop from May ’13 when distressed properties accounted for 18% of sales. Distressed condo sales also dropped 50% during May accounting for just 6% of May ’14 sales compared with 12% in May ’13.

Dining Around The Desert: Adobe Grill At La Quinta Resort & Club

The Patio Area At Adobe Grill, La Quinta Resort & Club

This past week, my husband Bill and I along with another couple decided to visit the Adobe Grill at the La Quinta Resort & Club. It had been years since any of us had eaten there, so we were looking forward to the experience.

Entering the bright and cheery space that is upstairs and to the right from the main entrance to the Resort, we were promptly greeted and taken to a very nice table in front of the ten-foot tequila display.

More Than 100 Tequila's To Choose From

Keeping with the theme, we ordered a variety of different margaritas from our server Osvaldo, all of which were very tasty and not too strong. Mine was peach, and it was just the right balance of sweet and tart. You can’t go wrong with a margarita here as they offer more than 100 tequilas.

We started out with their signature guacamole that our server made tableside. Just the right mix of avocado, onions, tomatoes, jalapenos, cilantro and lime juice served with very good tortilla chips that came with two different types of salsa.

Sampling Fresh House Made Tamales

Bill asked about tamales, and the server had the tamale maker fire up a sample to try. The tamale was very good, so Bill and our friend Guy had some of these award-winning tamales served with rice and beans. They were moist and had just the right amount of masa in relationship to the fillings.

My friend Terri had a chicken quesadilla, and I had the combo platter of a chicken enchilada and chili relleno. I ended up only eating half as I had enjoyed too much guacamole before dinner!

Dine On The Large Patio

The Adobe Grill is a colorful and happy place with a nice bar inside and during the season offers one of the best outdoor patios in the valley.

On weekends, there is live music to enjoy outside among the citrus trees and a nice view too. It’s on the pricey side for Mexican food, but you are at a resort, paying resort prices.

Summer Hours: Wednesdays through Sundays: 5 PM to 10 PM. Happy Hour from 5 to 6 PM.

O'Donnell Golf Club was built in 1926 by wildcat oil millionaire Thomas A. O'Donnell. O'Donnell came to Palm Springs for health reasons after striking it rich in the oil fields of Southern California and Mexico. He had wintered in Palm Springs since the early 1920s and had a home built for himself in 1925. He bank rolled an expansion of The Desert Inn Hotel where he used to stay and worked out a long-term land lease for his golf course just behind the hotel. The Desert Inn continued operations until 1967. The O'Donnell House still stands today and is visible from downtown Palm Springs.

Today O’Donnell Golf Club members are still enjoying those original nine holes and the O'Donnell Golf Club with its historic clubhouse remains a testament to Palm Springs' golfing heritage, still delighting members and guests alike.

Evolution of Palm Springs Area Golf Courses

21 Years Passed Before Course #2 Opened

And while the El Mirador Golf Course in Palm Springs opened briefly in 1929, it was almost 21 years before the next Palm Springs area golf course, and then many more started springing up around the Coachella Valley from Palm Springs in the West to Indio and even Salton Sea at the East end of the Valley.

Palm Springs Area Development Takes Off In The 60's & 70's

The rapid growth of golf courses in the 60s and 70s transformed Palm Springs into a global golfing destination. This expansion continued into the 21st century, with the 100th course opening in 2001. The evolution of Palm Springs golf courses reflects the area's development from a quiet desert retreat to a world-renowned resort destination.

Thunderbird Country Club opened in 1951 as the 2nd 18-hole golf course in the desert. It was followed by Tamarisk Country Club in 1952, Bermuda Dunes Country Club in 1958, and Indian Wells Country Club in 1956. By 1960 the desert had seven 18-hole golf courses.

The 1960s saw an explosion of golf course development in Palm Springs and the surrounding desert communities. New courses included Seven Lakes Country Club in 1965, Eldorado Country Club in 1957, and La Quinta Country Club in 1965.

The 1970s and 1980s brought even more golf courses to the desert, including the world-famous PGA West courses. Mission Hills Country Club opened in 1970 and became the home of the Dinah Shore Tournament, now known as the Chevron Championship.

The 1990s saw another boom in golf course construction, with many of the newer courses being built as part of planned residential communities. The 100th golf course in the desert opened in 2001.

La Quinta Resort & Club Soon To Be Palm Springs Record Holder

July 8th La Quinta Resort & Club Becomes Longest Operating Palm Springs Area Resort

On July 8th, The La Quinta Resort & Club will become the longest operating hotel/resort in the Palm Springs area. That’s due to the current record holder for oldest hotel, The Spa Resort Casino Hotel closing on July 8th.

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians announced the closing on their Facebook page to launch “a new vision” for downtown Palm Springs, which will be announced by the tribe later this year. The Tribe’s casino however is not closing.

Opened In 1927; Major Renovations This Summer

Built by Walter Morgan and opened in 1927, La Quinta Resort is one of the most popular properties in the desert and is slated for major renovations during the summer. The charm of this Spanish hacienda-styled resort is set to be preserved but with the property taking on a brightened look.

The summer will see refurbishing of the resort's 620 guest casitas and suites. Upgrades will include bedding, carpeting, wall coverings, tile, window treatments and bath fixtures to the furniture in materials and colors that pick up the hues of the desert landscape and La Quinta Resort’s iconic, hand-painted tiles.

Improvements To 41 Swimming Pools

Decking around the resort's 41 swimming pools will be redone, and new shade structures are being added to many areas. The main lobby will be opened up to draw in light and offer guests more lounge appeal.

The La Quinta resort will be open through the summer as work will be staged through the fall in a way to keep interference to a minimum.

Popular With Celebrities Then & Now

Early on, La Quinta Resort & Club was a retreat where Hollywood celebrities such as Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Ginger Rogers, Bette Davis and Frank Capra rubbed tennis elbows with America’s business elite such as the Vanderbilt’s and the Crocker family of Southern Pacific fame. Celebs still seem to enjoy the La Quinta Resort as just last month I was playing tennis just one court over from Will Ferrell.
